Scripted: 15th September

Myself and Sophie decided to work together as a pair for both of our assessed performances. As we are couple, it allows for a great working partnership and chemistry and we also share the same creative outlook and work well together- not letting relationship come between work. Therefore we will be able to come up with some great interesting ideas, and build off one another as well as having natural and strong interaction on stage. Although we were willing to work in a larger group which would have meant even more ideas being put together this would have caused someone to be left out, therefore we were happy to work as a pair. As a group we knew we wanted to keep the same format of performances from last year- a natural scripted piece and an abstract devised. This works well as it allows you to display two completely different styles and the abstract ideas are much more easily implemented in your own original piece of work. However for our Scripted performance we intially dicussed the aim to include some of the theories of Brecht and Artaud alongside an overall Stanislavski inspired piece. Therefore we want to perform using naturalistic acting with the methods of 'What if', 'Circles of Attention' and 'Emotion Memory' from Stanislavski but also implement a Brechtian style by portraying a strong message and an Artaudian style through audience interaction, by using a more involving staging other than the traditional Proscenium Arch. The styles of other practitioners will only be used as supporting styles to enhance the performance and make it feel different to a traditional naturalistic play. We will not incorporate Brechtian and Artaudian theories of acting as this will confuse the true style and nature of the performance, making it seem it is trying to be everything, therefore there would be no continuity or cohesion .

The 'Shirley Goldfarb and Gregory Masurovsky' painting has a surreal, dark and mysterious feel about it under close analysis. What was clear to us was the idea of two split worlds or styles. Particularly Men and Women, Light and Dark, Good and Evil, Reality and Dream. These are all good ideas to inspire our performances. The painting is a good stimulus as it has a host of different interprations and symbols hidden in even the smallest aspects of the painting which will make for a wide range of different ideas being extracted. From the outset Myself and Sophie wanted to use the idea of twos or split sides, styles or worlds, especially men and women and light and dark. For our Scripted performance we intend to look for plays that include a story about domestic abuse and its effects and consequences of those involved as it is a strong and shocking topic that would be a challenge for Myself and Sophie to portray but one that would work due to us feeling comfortable with one another during close, intimate or tense scenes. It also links well to the split side and styles of men and women and light and dark.
